Renting a car in St. Thomas, or St John is a fantastic way to explore the island at your own pace. 1. Choosing the Right Rental Company
Several reputable car rental companies operate in St. Thomas. That said, never trust the national airport brands. They might offer a great rate, but the car won’t be here when you arrive. If you’re one of the lucky ones, the chances are the price will not stay the same. The old bait n’ switch!

You can check our availability here, but if we’re sold out, we recommend the following companies:

– Paradise
– Key n’ Go
– Amalie
– L&L

It’s a good idea to compare prices, read reviews, and check the terms and conditions before making a reservation. Unfortunately, we see a LOT of ‘rental car companies’ with fake reviews, no physical location, and low quality, or old vehicles. We are proud to offer our guests the lowest rate guarantee. With over 10,000 guests served, and a 100% five star rating across all platforms, we’re confident our team is the right choice for you.

2. Booking Your Rental Car
– Advance Reservations
It’s advisable to book your car several months in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons (December to April). This ensures availability and often provides better rates.

– Rental Duration
Consider how long you’ll need the vehicle. Most companies offer daily, or weekly rentals. If you’re planning to explore extensively, contact us to see if there are any discounted rates. Being honest, there’s no incentive for a rental car company in St Thomas or St John to offer discounted long term rates as vehicles could be booked ten times over.

3. Understanding Local Driving Rules
– Driving Side
In St. Thomas, cars drive on the left side of the road. Be prepared for this change if you’re used to driving on the right. It’s easy!

– Speed Limits
Speed limits are generally lower than those in mainland U.S. Expect speeds of 15-25 mph in towns and 35 mph on country roads.

4. Insurance Considerations
Before finalizing your rental, review your insurance options. You’re required by law to present proof of your own insurance. If a rental company tries to offer you insurance, it’s probably a scam, and almost certainly illegal.

5. Picking Up Your Car
– Location
Most rental companies meet guests at the Cyril E. King Airport or in popular tourist areas like Charlotte Amalie. Confirm your pick-up location when booking.

– Documentation
Bring your driver’s license, credit card, and confirmation details. If you have specific insurance, have the documentation handy as well.

6. Returning Your Car
Most companies will require you to return the car with a full tank of gas. Be sure to refuel before heading to the drop-off location to avoid extra charges. Make sure the vehicle is free of excessive sand to avoid cleaning fees!
